Case Studies - Hauliers

  • Fleet owners wanting to protect parked trailers
  • Hauliers operating vehicles to and from Europe
  • Hauliers regularly using agency drivers
  • Large national/international hauliers with multiple depots

Customers: Fleet owners wanting to protect parked trailers

Problem:

  • Owners face a risk of theft from or of trailers when parked, especially in isolated locations
  • Conventional mapping systems provide only data for roads, with no visual data for large areas where trailers may be typically stored or parked up.

Solution:

By fitting a tracking system to the trailer unit, powered by solar energy, operators are able to record its location. Setting up geofencing around the area and fitting an alert sensor to the doors mean that, should the trailer be moved outside the area or the doors be tampered with, an alert will be sent by email and/or text to the fleet manager. Our advanced Ordanance Survey mapping technology allows precise pinpointing of vehicles and trailers even off road.

Customers: Hauliers operating vehicles to and from Europe

Problem:

  • Operators want to track their vehicles across Europe without prohibitive extra charges.
  • There is the ever-present risk of heavy penalities for vehicle owners if illegal immigrants are found hiding on board a vehicle.

Solution:

The Trackonix system can not only track vehicles within the UK but the system also allows easy tracking across Europe. This facility is not unique but, due to the nature of our private APN with Your Communications plc, we are able to offer the service at a much reduced cost. Customers can then track vehicles with the same ease as they can when their vehicles are in the UK.

By attaching an alert sensor to the back door of a vehicle, a driver can leave it in confidence, knowing that if anyone tampers with the doors, an automatic text alert will be sent to both the driver and operator.

For customers operating regularly into Europe, the Trackonix system offers a complete solution to their vehicle tracking needs at a realistic price. Both the driver and company benefit from the peace of mind of the door alert in reducing the risk of illegal stowaways.

Customers: Hauliers regularly using agency drivers

Problem:

  • With driver shortages in the UK, and an increased reliance on agency drivers, it can be difficult to monitor working hours where drivers may drive different vehicles; consequently, adherence to maximum working hours under the European Working Time Directive can be difficult to prove.

Solution:

Using the Driver Identity Tag product, alongside the Trackonix tracking system, the identity of a specific driver can be recorded. Each driver has a unique identifying tag which is scanned on starting up the vehicle and again at the end of each journey, so the system can record the hours worked by each driver. An alert fitted to the system can send an email or text to the fleet manager, warning of cases where a driver is nearing the maximum permissible number of hours within a given period.

Companies can then prove that they are taking all possible steps to remove the dangerous risk of any driver working excessive hours.

Customers: Large national/international hauliers with multiple depots

Problem:

  • Operators identified a need to have a more efficient centralised way of locating the ”nearest“ vehicle where the information was typically only held by individual depot managers.
  • Operators felt that sometimes drivers were tempted not to use the quickest route (e.g. motorways rather than A-Roads) through personal choice, thereby increasing journey times and costs.

Solution:

The Trackonix solution allows customised levels of access to fleet monitoring, with central access to the whole fleet, and segregated access where required to different categories of vehicles. In this way, the central controller can identify the nearest vehicle to a point and allocate jobs more efficiently.

Through the tracking system, drivers are made aware that they need to plan their routes effectively to minimise journey times and save costs.
